Servant Leadership — Robert K. Greenleaf

February 23, 2010

Robert K. Greenleaf, in The Servant as Leader, an essay he published in 1970, coined the phrase “servant leadership”.  In that essay he wrote, “The best test (of servant leadership), and difficult to administer, is:  Do those (who are) served grow as persons?  Do they, while being served, become healthier, wise, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants (leaders).

“The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first.  Then, conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.?”
